The Open Network Video Interface Forum, or more commonly known as ONVIF, is an industry forum that aims to develop an open standard for the interoperability of IP-based security products; allowing IP-based products within the video surveillance industry to communicate with each other seamlessly.
ONVIF was set up to drive product interoperability and standardisation of network interfaces of IP-based network video products. This means that network cameras, network video recorders (NVRs), video management softwares (VMSs) from different vendors can all communicate to each other without the need to configure proprietary commands or addresses.
Included in the Core Specification set out by ONVIF included:
- IP configuration
- Device discovery
- Device management
- Media configuration
- Real time viewing
- Event handling
- PTZ camera control
- Video analytics
- Security
- Storage
- Aspects of analytics
Further to this, at the end of 2012m ONVIF also release Profile S to further improve the interoperability between products that conform to different versions of ONVIF Core Specifications. Profile S is the first in a series of profile introductions that will aid users in determining interoperable components without the need to know whether specific devices are compatible between the different ONVIF specification versions.
D-Link works closely with ONVIF to make its IP surveillance products easier to integrate with third party devices. This not only gives the customer more flexibility when it comes to product choices but also saves time and money when customer are looking to either set up IP-based video surveillance for the first time or expanding existing set up.
